The Kokuhoukan opened in 1928 as a museum of history and art. The museum was entrusted with storing and displaying important works selected among the carvings, paintings, handicrafts, ancient manuscripts, and other cultural treasures handed down among the temples and shrines of Kamakura and surroundings. Most of the objects were either produced in the Kamakura and Muromachi periods, or brought to Japan from China. Unlike Kyoto and Nara, you get a strong sense of exoticism with notable influences from the local area or Zen Buddhist culture.
