The Kamakura Annex, which opened in 1984 as an annex to the old Kamakura Hall (closed in 2016), is located off the Kamakura Kaido heading toward Kita-Kamakura. Designed to co-exist in harmony with the lush, natural surroundings of Kamakura, this museum offers a selection of sculptures—part of a major current in postwar art in Japan—displayed in the open air in the spacious garden. The garden itself was extended to preserve ancient remains found on the site. The building closed for renovation in 2017, but will reopen in 2019.
