Kamakura City Kaburaki Kiyokata Memorial Art Museum

Be sure to make time to enjoy the graceful bijinga masterpieces in this museum built on the site of the artist’s former home.

The museum is located on the site of the former home of Kaburaki Kiyokata, a master of modern Japanese-style painting active from the Meiji through the Showa periods. The exhibits include Kiyokata’s work as a magazine illustrator in addition to his bijinga, Japanese-style paintings of innocent and graceful women, life in the lively shitamachi downtown in Tokyo, and his illustrations for books by Higuchi Ichiyo and Izumi Kyoka. The museum highlights include the garden where Kiyokata’s favorite morning glories bloom, and the replica of his studio. The museum shop’s unique merchandise is also popular.
