The awe-inspiring gate that Natsume Soseki entered

Engakuji is dedicated to the warriors who died fighting the 1281 Mongol invasion. Founded by Hojo Tokimune, the eighth regent to the Kamakura bakufu, in 1282, this temple has been designated a national historic site and is home to many designated important cultural properties. These include the magnificent main temple gate, which features in Soseki Natsume’s novel The Gate, together with the reliquary hall and the great bell, which are both designated national treasures. The treasures are put on public display for a few days in early November.

Experience Zen culture in Kamakura
