Minamoto Yoritomo built the Tsurugaoka Hachimangu at its current location in 1180 , when he had it moved from Yuigo. During the Kamakura bakufu, important rites were held here. As the patron deity of the Minamoto clan (the Genji) and the protector of warriors, Hachiman became a bastion of faith for the samurai. The compound has been designated a national historic site, and its national treasures and important cultural properties are handed down as sacred treasures.
Portable shrines and handicrafts dating back to the Kamakura period are on display in the treasure hall at the main shrine. Be sure to visit after paying your respects at the shrine.
